Great commentary on "the Oklahoma problem", followed by a bunch of reader comments that just prove Meyer's points about Oklahoma. At least one person suggested Meyers leave the state. I am sure that he may have thought about it, as have many of us who live in this embarrassingly red state, but not because we don't love Oklahoma, instead because we want to be a part of what works. Progressives are just like everybody else, we want to be a part of the winning team and have long hungered to participate in a world where our values matter. Now, with the election of our 44th President, we can.
What do you think should be done about Oklahoma? What can be done in our state to help guide people away from their fears, anger and judgment and toward ways of working together that can support us all? Democrat or Republican, surely we can do this.
Sometimes, with some people in our lives, we just have to agree to disagree and then roll up our sleeves together to figure out what we can do to fix the problems we do agree on--but this kind of thing has to be predicated on understanding, trust, civility and kindness. With the rise in hate crimes since Obama's election, many are wondering if this is possible. On this website today I went to buy an Obama t-shirt for my dog and found quite a bit of hate rhetoric to boot. Like Meyers, I believe that we can take each other to task and I support freedom of speech. I just wish we could find a way to do so without making each other wrong, and I am just as guilty of this as the next gal.
